I wanted to bear witness to this surprising alchemy, transmuting concrete, dust, debris and rubble into a pulse of life.
Situated on the border between Tongzhou and Beijing, this place, which I thought was derelict when I observed it from afar, instead reveals a place of organised, harmonious life, imbued with a deep sense of humanity.
This series of photos is a portrait of this atypical place, far removed from the clichés of China in the media. I enjoyed coming to this peaceful place many times, meeting the locals, forging a sincere bond with them and finding peace and quiet, far from the hustle and bustle of the city just a few hundred metres away.
